Jesse Roth
January 1, 1935 - March 13, 2026 (Age 91)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Jesse. Born on January 1st, 1935, Jesse Roth lived a life brimming with curiosity, dedication, and a quiet, wonderful warmth that touched everyone he knew. He wasn’t a man for grand gestures, but for consistent kindness, a thoughtful question, and a twinkle in his eye that let you know he was truly listening. I remember visiting him and Mom in the city, and always being drawn to his study – not because it was impressive, but because it felt like the center of his world. Books piled high, papers covered in notes, and always a half-finished crossword puzzle on the desk. He’d explain his work, something about hormones and the body’s incredible systems, and even though I didn’t always *understand* it, I always understood his passion for it. He truly dedicated his life to understanding and helping others through his work as an endocrinologist, a career he pursued with unwavering commitment after graduating from Columbia and Einstein.
Family meant everything to Jesse. He and my mother, Elaine, built a life filled with love and support, and he was a devoted father and grandfather. He wasn’t the loudest cheerleader at soccer games, but you always knew he was there, quietly proud. He had this amazing ability to make each of us feel seen and valued, offering advice when asked, but mostly just *being* present. He loved a good debate, especially about politics or current events, but always with respect and a genuine desire to understand different perspectives. And oh, how he loved a good deli sandwich! A trip to New York wasn’t complete without a pilgrimage to his favorite spot, and he always insisted on sharing.
Beyond his work and family, Jesse found joy in the simple things. He was a lifelong learner, always reading, always questioning. He loved classical music, and could often be found listening to it softly while he worked. He wasn’t flashy, but he appreciated beauty in all its forms – a well-written book, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, a sunny afternoon in the park. He had a dry wit that could catch you off guard, and a gentle humor that made even difficult moments a little brighter.
Jesse’s impact wasn’t about accolades or recognition, though he certainly earned those throughout his career at places like the Feinstein Institute. It was about the countless lives he touched, the patients he helped, the family he cherished, and the quiet, steady kindness he offered to the world. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, compassion, and a deep, abiding love for life. We’ll miss his quiet presence, his thoughtful questions, and that wonderful twinkle in his eye more than words can say. He passed away peacefully on March 13th, 2026, and will be forever in our hearts.
