Jim Whittaker

January 1, 1929 - April 9, 2026 (Age 97)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Jim. Born on January 1st, 1929, he always said starting the year with a bang set the tone for a life lived fully – and oh, how he lived. Most people know Jim as the first American to summit Mount Everest, a feat he accomplished in 1963 with Nawang Gombu. But to us, he was so much more than a mountaineer. He was Dad, Grandpa, a mischievous twinkle in the eye, and the man who could fix absolutely anything with duct tape and a story. I remember being a little kid and being absolutely mesmerized by his tales of the Himalayas, of the biting wind and the breathtaking views. He’d downplay the danger, of course, always focusing on the beauty and the challenge. He even brought back a tiny prayer flag for each of us grandkids, which we treasured. Jim wasn’t one for stuffy gatherings or boasting. He was happiest with his hands busy – whether he was building something in his workshop, meticulously planning a backpacking trip, or simply puttering in the garden. He loved a good cup of coffee, a roaring fire, and the company of those he loved. He and his wife, Donna, were a team in every sense of the word, sharing a quiet, enduring love that was a beautiful thing to witness. They built a life filled with adventure, but always centered around family. He instilled in all of us a love for the outdoors, a respect for nature, and a belief in pushing your limits – not for glory, but for the sheer joy of it. He always said Everest wasn’t about conquering the mountain, but conquering yourself. He touched so many lives, not just through his incredible accomplishments, but through his quiet generosity and unwavering kindness. He mentored countless young climbers, always emphasizing safety and respect for the mountains. He volunteered his time with local search and rescue, and always had a listening ear and a helping hand for anyone in need. He never sought the spotlight, but his impact was profound. He showed us all how to live with courage, humility, and a deep appreciation for the world around us. Jim passed away peacefully on April 9th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, love, and a whole lot of incredible stories. He’ll be deeply missed by Donna, his children, his grandchildren, and all who knew him. We’ll carry his spirit with us, always looking up, always reaching for new heights, and always remembering the man who taught us to believe in the impossible.
