John Coley
January 1, 1935 - March 21, 2026 (Age 91)
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John William Coley on March 21st, 2026, at the age of 91. John, born on January 1st, 1935, was a truly remarkable man – a quiet giant of a person who touched so many lives with his gentle spirit and unwavering passion for art. I have the privilege of being one of the many who adored him, and I’ll cherish the memories we shared for a lifetime. I remember vividly, as a young art student, being utterly captivated by his insightful critiques and warm encouragement. He had this incredible way of making art accessible and inspiring, not just for those studying it, but for everyone. He saw the beauty in everything, and he had a knack for bringing out that same beauty in others.
John’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with creativity and kindness. As a New Zealand painter and art critic, he dedicated himself to the world of art with a depth and enthusiasm that was truly infectious. His years as director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (now the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu) were a testament to his vision and dedication. But beyond his professional achievements, John was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband to [Spouse’s Name, if known, otherwise omit], a wonderful father to [Children’s Names, if known, otherwise omit], and a cherished grandfather to [Grandchildren’s Names, if known, otherwise omit]. He always made time for his family, offering a listening ear, a comforting presence, and a gentle smile. He truly believed in the power of connection and spent his life nurturing those around him.
He found joy in the simplest things – a perfectly painted landscape, a well-told story, a shared laugh with friends. You could always count on John to be there with a thoughtful observation, a kind word, or a perfectly timed piece of advice. He was a man of quiet wisdom, always willing to share his perspective, but never demanding attention. I remember countless evenings spent discussing art, life, and everything in between, fueled by good conversation and even better company. He wasn't one for grand pronouncements or dramatic gestures; his love was expressed through quiet acts of service and unwavering support.
John leaves behind a legacy of beauty, kindness, and inspiration. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He taught us to appreciate the world around us, to find joy in the everyday, and to always approach life with a gentle heart. His spirit will continue to live on in the art he championed, the lives he touched, and the countless memories we hold dear. Rest in peace, dear John. You made the world a brighter, more beautiful place.
