John Sterling (sportscaster)|John Sterling
January 1, 1939 - May 5, 2026 (Age 87)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to John. Just thinking about it feels…quiet. For so many of us, John *was* the sound of summer, the voice that meant baseball was on, and more specifically, the Yankees were playing. But he was so much more than just a broadcaster. He was a whirlwind of energy, a genuinely kind soul, and a man who lived life with a joyful exuberance that was completely infectious. I remember visiting him and his wife, Cecile, years ago, and he insisted on giving me a full tour of his collection of vintage radios – each one with a story, of course, and each one meticulously maintained. He wasn’t just *talking* about baseball all those years, he was living and breathing it, and loving every single moment.
John’s dedication to the Yankees was legendary, calling over 5,000 consecutive games! But beyond the stats and the iconic calls – “Don’t believe your eyes!” will forever echo in our memories – he truly cared about the players, the team, and, most importantly, the fans. He understood the power of baseball to connect people, to create shared memories, and he took that responsibility seriously. He wasn’t afraid to be silly, to be enthusiastic, to just *have fun* with it all, and that’s what made him so beloved. He always spoke so fondly of Cecile, his rock and partner in everything. Their love was a beautiful thing to witness, a quiet strength that underpinned all his boisterous energy.
He wasn’t just about baseball, though. John loved music, especially jazz, and he was a surprisingly good cook! He’d always be experimenting with new recipes, and Cecile would patiently taste-test everything. He had a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a quick wit that could disarm anyone. He loved a good joke, and he loved to make people laugh. He truly lit up a room. He leaves behind a legacy of incredible broadcasts, yes, but also a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a genuine love for life.
We’re all going to miss that voice, that energy, that unmistakable John Sterling enthusiasm. It’s a loss felt deeply by the Yankees organization, by baseball fans everywhere, and especially by Cecile and his family. But I think the best way to honor him is to remember him with a smile, to crank up some jazz, and maybe, just maybe, to believe our eyes when something amazing happens. Rest easy, John. You’ve earned it.
