Joseph "Leo" Carson Smith, born January 23, 1946, in Niagara Falls, ON, He died peacefully with his wife by his side, September 10, 2026, at Parkwood Mennonite Home in Waterloo, ON. He was 80 years old. He was predeceased by his parents Arnold and Mary Smith.
Leo was a people person, quick-witted, and genuinely interested in whoever was sitting across from him. He had a way of making everyone around him laugh, and he rarely let a conversation go without cracking a joke or sharing something he'd just learned. Those who knew him well remember his perpetual smile and his gift for drawing people in, whether it was family, friends, or strangers he'd just met.
For the last fifteen years, Leo's greatest joy, pride and love was his three grandchildren, Sidney, Finn, and Lola. He and Mary Beth never missed a game or competition for 15 yrs for soccer, baseball, hockey, dance recitals, gymnastics meets, football, and rugby—they drove to every one, local or out of town. It was a labor of love that shaped those years. Beyond family, Leo pursued a range of interests with characteristic enthusiasm. He taught himself computer building through library books and turned that knowledge into a small side business for several years. He golfed, played card games with friends, and loved taking country drives with Mary Beth and friends, always looking for the next thing to learn or explore.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth Smith, who he has shared his life with for 61 years, . His beloved daughter, Lisa Scozzafava, and his adored three grandchildren, Sidney, Finn, Lola and his granddoggie Coco.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Marj Rau, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Cremation has taken place and a gathering to celebrate Leo’s life will be held and announced at a later date. Donations to (Lisa to provide this information) would be appreciated by the family. Donations may be made at the funeral home or online through the charity’s website. Please notify the funeral home of any online donations at (519)-749-8467.
