Born on March 28, 1937, in the small village of Mokrzeszow, he grew up with the whir of a lathe in his father’s workshop and the rhythm of pedals on the dusty roads of his hometown. He never forgot the feel of the wind on his face as he chased a dream that began on a battered bicycle and led to the world stage. At the 1964 Tokyo Games, Józef was part of the Polish team that contested the men’s 100 km team time trial, a feat that still makes the older folks in his community smile when they talk about “the day we all gathered around the radio and held our breath.” A few years later, in 1965, he capped his racing career with a victory at the Tour de Pologne, a triumph that wasn’t just about the trophy but about proving that perseverance could turn a modest farm boy into a national hero.
