Kapila Chandrasena
January 1, 1965 - May 8, 2026 (Age 61)
It is with heavy hearts, but a profound sense of gratitude for having known him, that we say goodbye to our beloved Kapila Chandrasena, who passed away on May 8, 2026. To the world, Kapila was a titan of industry—a brilliant mind who navigated the complexities of Sri Lankan telecommunications and aviation with unmatched grace. But to us, he was simply Kapila: the man with the infectious laugh, the steady hand in a storm, and a heart that was far larger than any boardroom could contain.
Whether he was leading SriLankan Airlines, Mihin Lanka, or Mobitel, Kapila approached every challenge with a unique blend of rigorous intellect and genuine humanity. He had this incredible ability to make everyone in a room feel seen, from the highest-ranking officials to the newest intern. He didn't just build networks and flight paths; he built bridges between people. He carried the lessons of his days at Royal College and his studies in Chicago and Melbourne not as badges of status, but as tools to serve his country and his community. He believed in excellence, not for the sake of ego, but because he believed in the potential of Sri Lanka.
Beyond the professional triumphs, Kapila found his greatest joy in the quiet, unscripted moments of life. He loved a long, winding conversation over a perfect cup of tea, the thrill of a well-planned journey, and the simple warmth of a family gathering. He was a man of deep intellect, yet he never lost his sense of wonder or his ability to find humor in the smallest things. His love for his family was his true north; they were his sanctuary and his greatest pride. He taught us that success is hollow if you don't have someone to share it with, and that kindness is the most important legacy one can leave behind.
Kapila’s impact is etched into the very fabric of our lives and our nation. He leaves behind a void that feels impossible to fill, yet he also leaves us with a blueprint for how to live: with purpose, with passion, and above all, with love. We will miss his guidance, his wisdom, and his warmth every single day, but we find comfort knowing that his spirit continues to soar, much like the planes he loved so dearly. Rest well, our dear Kapila. You lived beautifully.
