Kees Kuijs

January 1, 1932 - March 31, 2026 (Age 94)

If you ever met Kees Kuijs, you knew immediately that life with him was never dull, even when he was the quietest man in the room. Born in 1931, he carried himself with a steady, unshakeable grace that made everyone around him feel grounded. To the sporting world, he was Cornelis Johannes Kuijs, the reliable defender who anchored NAC Breda and proudly wore the orange jersey 43 times for the Netherlands between 1955 and 1962. But to us, he was just Kees—the man who’d laugh until he cried over a terrible joke, who insisted on fixing every leaky faucet himself, and who could light up a room just by walking through the door. Football was his first love, but it never overshadowed the gentle, generous man beneath. He played with a quiet strength, much like he lived: always watching out for others, always stepping in when someone needed a steady hand. Behind the pitch, Kees’s greatest joys were always found at home. He adored his family with a quiet devotion that showed up in everyday moments: morning coffees brewed perfectly, long porch sessions listening to his grandchildren, and the little handwritten notes he’d slip into coat pockets. When he wasn’t swapping stories about muddy matches, you’d find him tending his vegetable garden, whittling wooden trinkets, or perfecting his famous stamppot. He believed happiness lived in the ordinary, and he had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel seen and valued. Friends, neighbors, and former teammates all carried a piece of his warmth. He never chased the spotlight, but he left an imprint on every heart he touched, teaching us how to be loyal, how to listen, and how to love deeply. Kees left us on March 31, 2026, but his laughter and steady kindness will outlast the final whistle. We’ll miss his humming to old Dutch tunes, his knowing winks before offering advice, and the quiet comfort of just sitting beside him. Thank you, our beloved Kees, for a life so beautifully lived. You guarded the backline on the pitch, but in our lives, you were our greatest shield against hardship and worry. Rest easy now. We’ll honor you in every shared story, every tended garden, and every act of quiet grace. We love you endlessly, and we’ll carry you with us, always.
