Käthe Menzel-Jordan was a remarkable woman whose life spanned an extraordinary century of German history. Born Käthe Hertel in 1916, she witnessed the tumult of two world wars, the division and reunification of Germany, and the dramatic technological and social changes of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Throughout it all, she maintained an unwavering commitment to preserving the architectural treasures of her beloved Thuringia. As an architect and preservationist, Käthe dedicated her career to restoring the historic buildings of Erfurt and the surrounding region that had been damaged or destroyed during World War II. Her work on the Goethe House in Weimar, the Augustinerkloster, and Schloss Molsdorf in Erfurt were labors of love that ensured future generations could connect with their cultural heritage. She approached each restoration project with meticulous care, always striving to honor the original craftsmanship while making these historic spaces functional for modern use. Beyond her professional achievements, Käthe was a devoted wife to her husband Wilhelm and a loving mother to their three children. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome in her home, where the aroma of her famous Apfelstrudel often greeted visitors. In her later years, she delighted in sharing stories of her long life with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, patiently answering their questions about history with the perspective that only someone who had lived through it could provide. Käthe passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, just a few months shy of her 110th birthday. She is survived by her children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
