Lal Singh (politician)|Lal Singh
January 1, 1943 - March 28, 2026 (Age 83)
It feels utterly surreal to be writing this, to say goodbye to Lal. Born on January 1st, 1943, he lived a life that was, quite frankly, a whirlwind of passion, purpose, and an infuriatingly stubborn belief in what was right. I remember when he first told me about wanting to be a politician – he was sitting at our kitchen table, surrounded by stacks of newspapers and a half-eaten plate of samosas, completely serious. “Someone has to actually *do* something,” he declared, and that was Lal in a nutshell: always striving, always engaged, always ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work. He served the people of Punjab with an unwavering dedication for over four decades, a six-time MLA, a true champion for his community. But beyond the titles and the political battles, he was, at his core, just Lal – a wonderfully chaotic, deeply kind, and occasionally exasperating man.
Lal’s life wasn’t just about the political arena. He absolutely adored cricket – a terrible batsman, mind you, but a phenomenal cheerleader. We spent countless evenings at the local ground, him shouting encouragement and me trying to decipher the rules. He also had a surprising talent for gardening; his rose bushes were legendary, and he’d spend hours meticulously tending to them, muttering about the perfect shade of pink. More than anything, though, he loved his family. He was the most devoted husband to my mother, a constant source of strength and laughter, and an incredibly proud and loving father to his children and grandchildren. He’d always say, “Family is everything,” and he truly lived by those words.
Lal’s impact on those around him was profound. He had a knack for seeing the good in people, for believing in their potential, and for giving them a voice. He wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, to speak truth to power, and he inspired so many to get involved and make a difference. He genuinely cared about the struggles of ordinary people, and he fought tirelessly to improve their lives. He wasn’t perfect, of course – he could be fiercely opinionated and occasionally prone to dramatic pronouncements – but that was all part of his charm.
We’ll miss his booming laugh, his unwavering optimism, and his ability to make even the most mundane moments feel special. Lal Singh leaves behind a legacy of service, of passion, and of a life lived fully and with an open heart. He may be gone, but the warmth of his spirit, and the countless lives he touched, will continue to shine brightly.
