Lee Sang-hee (general)|Lee Sang-hee
January 1, 1946 - March 11, 2026 (Age 80)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to our beloved Sang-hee. He passed away peacefully on March 11th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, strength, and a whole lot of love. Born on January 1st, 1946, he lived a life dedicated to his country and his family, and he did it all with a quiet dignity and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. I’ll always remember his booming laugh – it could fill a room and chase away any gloom. He wasn’t one for grand pronouncements, but he had a way of making you feel seen and valued, just by listening intently and offering a steady, reassuring presence. He was the kind of man you could tell anything to, knowing it would be held safe and sound.
Sang-hee’s dedication to the Republic of Korea Armed Forces was undeniable. Serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later as Minister of National Defense, he carried the weight of responsibility with grace and unwavering commitment. But beyond the impressive titles and the years of service, he was simply Dad, Grandpa, and a devoted husband to his cherished wife. He adored his children and grandchildren, always making time for their games, their stories, and their triumphs. I remember one Christmas, he spent hours painstakingly building a miniature train set for his grandson, even though he’d never done anything like it before. He just wanted to see the boy’s face light up. Family was everything to him, the bedrock of his life.
He found immense joy in simple things: a good book, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, a quiet walk in the park. He wasn’t flashy or demanding; contentment seemed to radiate from him. He loved tending to his garden, nurturing the roses and vegetables with a gentle hand, and sharing the bounty with neighbors and friends. He had a dry wit and a playful sense of humor that kept us all on our toes. He could find the funny side of almost any situation, and his ability to diffuse tension with a well-timed joke was a gift.
Sang-hee’s impact on those around him was profound. He inspired loyalty, respect, and a deep sense of trust. He was a mentor to many, always willing to share his wisdom and offer guidance. He leaves behind a void that can never truly be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, and countless others whose lives he touched. We will miss him dearly, but we are eternally grateful for the time we had with him. Rest in peace, dear Sang-hee.
