Legh Davis
January 1, 1941 - May 12, 2026 (Age 85)
Legh Davis left a hole in this world that no one else can fill, and honestly, I'm still not used to it. He was the kind of man who remembered your coffee order after meeting you once, who shook your hand like he meant it, and who could talk you through any problem with that quiet, steady voice of his. Whether he was debating policy in the Legislative Council or helping a neighbor fix a fence, Legh showed up. He showed up all the way.
He was a farmer at heart, even when he was busy holding the Liberal Party together and serving as President. If you talked to him long enough, the conversation always circled back to the land, to seasons, to what the soil needed. He loved South Australia with that deep, unflashy devotion — not the tourist version, but the one that knows every creek bed and every rough patch of history. He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition and party spokesman across portfolios, but he never lost the common touch. I remember him at family barbecues, apron already on, flipping snags while somehow still keeping up with the latest poll numbers. That was just Legh.
His family was everything to him. His wife, his kids, his grandkids — he adored them with a fierceness that surprised people who only knew the public version of him. He'd light up talking about his grandchildren's school projects, their soccer games, the mess they made in his shed. He was proud in a quiet way, the kind of proud that doesn't need announcing.
Legh served South Australia for over two decades and built something real in those years — trust, respect, relationships that outlasted his time in Parliament. People who worked with him still talk about how he listened, how he didn't grandstand, how he just did the work. He retired in 2002 but never really retired from caring about people.
We'll miss his laugh, his stubbornness, his calm. The world is kinder because Legh Davis walked through it. That's the truth of it.
