Lin Yuan-lang
January 1, 1941 - March 27, 2026 (Age 85)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Lin Yuan-lang. He left us on March 27th, 2026, after a life filled with a quiet strength, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and a deep, abiding love for Nantou County. I met Yuan-lang many years ago, and even then, he had this way of making you feel instantly comfortable, like you’d known him your whole life. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of genuine kindness and a dry, self-deprecating humor that could always crack you up. I’ll always remember the time he tried to teach me how to properly fold an origami crane – let’s just say it was a spectacularly messy, but utterly delightful, afternoon. He had this incredible ability to see the good in everyone and everything, and he approached every challenge with a determined spirit, a spirit that served him so well throughout his career.
Yuan-lang’s dedication to Nantou County was legendary. As Magistrate, he poured his heart and soul into the region, focusing on sustainable development and preserving its natural beauty – the mountains he loved so dearly. He wasn’t driven by ambition, but by a genuine desire to improve the lives of the people who called Nantou home. He and Mei-ling were the most wonderful couple; their love was a constant, a quiet anchor in their lives. They built a family filled with warmth and laughter, and he was the most devoted and loving father and grandfather. I remember him patiently explaining the intricacies of hiking trails to his grandchildren, always emphasizing the importance of respecting the mountains and their history.
Beyond his political life, Yuan-lang was a passionate birdwatcher – he could identify almost any species by its song! He spent countless hours in the forests and hills, sketchbook in hand, capturing the beauty of the natural world. He also had a surprising fondness for collecting antique teacups, a quiet hobby that reflected his appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. More than anything, though, he cherished his friends and family, always making time for a phone call, a visit, or just a shared cup of tea.
Yuan-lang’s legacy isn’t etched in headlines or grand monuments, but in the countless lives he touched with his kindness, his integrity, and his unwavering dedication. He leaves behind a void that can never truly be filled, but also a wealth of cherished memories and a profound example of a life lived with purpose and love. We will miss you dearly, Yuan-lang.
