Lorena Clare Facio
January 1, 1944 - March 18, 2026 (Age 82)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Lorena Clare Facio, but my heart feels full just thinking about the incredible life she lived. Born on January 1st, 1944, Lorena was a force of nature – a whirlwind of warmth, laughter, and a genuine curiosity about everything and everyone. I’ll always remember her infectious giggle, the way her eyes would sparkle when she was truly excited, and her uncanny ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room. She wasn’t one for grand gestures, but her love was a quiet, steady current, always there to support and uplift. We shared so many silly moments – like the time she tried to teach our dog, Pepe, to jump through a hoop (it didn’t go well, but it was hilarious!) – and those memories are treasures I’ll hold onto forever.
Lorena’s life was defined by a deep connection to the land and a lifelong passion for horses. Growing up in Costa Rica, she spent countless hours with them, developing an unparalleled understanding and respect for these magnificent animals. It was a joy to watch her, completely lost in the moment, grooming a horse or guiding one through a challenging course. Later in life, she became a respected figure in the equestrian community, and her dedication to the sport was truly inspiring. Of course, her time as First Lady from 1998 to 2002 was a significant chapter, a role she embraced with grace and a genuine desire to serve her country and her husband, Miguel Ángel.
Beyond her public life, Lorena was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished sister. She adored her family fiercely, always putting their needs before her own. Her home was a haven of warmth and welcome, filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and the sound of lively conversation. She had a remarkable ability to bring people together, fostering a sense of community wherever she went. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, but she always did so with kindness and a genuine desire to understand different perspectives.
Lorena’s battle with pancreatic cancer was incredibly difficult, but even in the face of such adversity, she maintained her spirit and her unwavering optimism. She taught us all the importance of living each day to the fullest and finding joy in the simple things. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a profound appreciation for the beauty of life. We will miss her dearly, but her memory will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
