Madhumita Raut

January 1, 1967 - March 21, 2026 (Age 59)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Madhumita. Our hearts ache with the loss of this incredible woman, a radiant spirit who brought so much beauty and grace into the world. Born on January 1st, 1967, Madhumita left us far too soon on March 21st, 2026, after a sudden cardiac arrest. But the legacy she leaves behind, the joy she shared, and the lives she touched will resonate forever. I remember when she was a little girl, already mimicking the movements of the dancers she’d watch on television – a tiny, determined figure with a passion burning bright. That passion blossomed into a lifelong dedication to Odissi, a dance form she not only mastered but shared with so many others. Madhumita was a true daughter of her parents, Mamta Khuntia and Mayadhar Raut, carrying on her father’s vital work in reviving and preserving the traditions of Odissi. Growing up surrounded by that rich heritage shaped her, instilled in her a deep respect for artistry and a commitment to sharing it. She poured her heart and soul into teaching at the Jayantika Association’s Mayadhar Raut School of Odissi Dance in Delhi, nurturing the talents of countless students and passing on the beauty of this ancient art form. I’ll always cherish the memory of her laughter, her quick wit, and the way her eyes would sparkle when she talked about dance. She had a warmth that drew people in, a genuine kindness that made everyone feel seen and valued. Beyond the dance, Madhumita loved simple pleasures – a good book, a cup of chai with friends, and spending time with her family. She was fiercely devoted to them, a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. Her home was always open, filled with warmth, delicious food, and lively conversation. She found immense joy in connecting with people, in sharing stories, and in creating a sense of belonging. She had a quiet strength, a resilience that allowed her to face challenges with grace and optimism. Madhumita’s impact extended far beyond the dance studio. She was a mentor, a friend, a confidante, and an inspiration to so many. She reminded us to appreciate the beauty in the world, to embrace our passions, and to live each day with intention and joy. We will miss her dearly, but we will carry her spirit within us, celebrating the extraordinary life of Madhumita Raut, a dancer, a teacher, a daughter, a sister, and a truly beautiful soul.
