Mai Murdmaa left us far too soon on March 25th, 2026, but her light, grace, and indomitable spirit will forever illuminate the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Born in Tallinn in 1939, Mai was the radiant heart of a family brimming with brilliance – her brother Ivar mapping the ocean depths, Allan designing buildings that touched the sky, and Kai unraveling the universe's mysteries. Yet, Mai chose a different kind of magic, one that spoke through movement and music, becoming one of Estonia's most cherished choreographers, dancers, and directors. She brought a warmth and fierce dedication to her craft that was utterly unique, turning the stage into a place of pure emotion and storytelling. From her earliest days at the Tallinn Ballet School to her triumphant graduation from GITIS, Mai lived and breathed ballet. Her time as a dancer with the Estonia Theatre was just the beginning of an extraordinary journey. As a choreographer and director, she poured her soul into every production, demanding excellence while nurturing the talent within each dancer. She possessed an uncanny ability to see the potential in others, pushing them to heights they never dreamed possible, all while wrapping her guidance in a genuine, loving care.
