Marcos Leite

January 1, 1953 - March 23, 2026 (Age 73)

Marcos "Marquinhos" Leite left this world on March 22, 2026, just one day shy of his 74th birthday, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. Born on January 1, 1953, in Brazil, Marcos grew to become a towering figure both literally and figuratively—standing at an impressive 6'10" as a center, he dominated the basketball court with grace and determination. Yet, it was his gentle soul and warm heart that truly made him larger than life. To his family, Marcos was so much more than an Olympic athlete. He was the devoted husband who could always be counted on for a listening ear, the father who taught his children that true strength comes from kindness, and the grandfather whose laughter could light up any room. Those closest to him remember his infectious smile, his habit of humming while cooking his famous feijoada, and the way he'd patiently teach his grandchildren to shoot hoops in the backyard, always letting them win just to see their faces light up with joy. Basketball was Marcos's passion, and he carried it with pride and humility throughout his life. Representing Brazil in three Olympic Games (1972, 1980, and 1984) and four FIBA World Cup competitions, he brought honor to his country while embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship. But even at the height of his athletic career, Marcos never lost sight of what mattered most—family, friendship, and the simple pleasures of life. He'd often say that his greatest victory wasn't a game won, but the love he shared with those around him. In his later years, Marcos found joy in coaching young athletes, passing on not just his skills but his philosophy that sports should build character and community. His former players speak of a mentor who believed in them when they didn't believe in themselves, who taught them that character matters more than championships. Now, as we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on—in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the love that continues to surround his family. Marcos Leite may have left the court, but he'll never leave our hearts.
