Marinella

January 1, 1939 - March 29, 2026 (Age 87)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to our beloved Marinella. Born on January 1st, 1939, she left us peacefully on March 29th, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with the effects of a stroke. But even in those difficult times, her spirit shone through – that incredible, vibrant spirit that defined her entire life. Most of you knew her as Marinella, the voice that captivated Greece for decades, the singer behind timeless classics like "Dio Portes Echi i Zoi" and "Giati Fovase." I knew her as something even more precious: my aunt, my confidante, and a woman who filled every room with laughter and warmth. I remember as a little girl, sneaking into rehearsals and being mesmerized by her power and grace, even when she was just warming up. She always made time for me, though, patiently teaching me a few Greek phrases and letting me “conduct” her band with a chopstick. Marinella’s voice was truly a gift, a force of nature that could move you to tears or fill you with joy. Representing Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 was a moment of national pride, and a testament to her talent. But for her, it was always about the music itself, about connecting with people through song. Beyond the stage, she was a devoted family woman. Her love for her children and grandchildren was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Sunday dinners at her house were legendary – a feast of delicious Greek food, lively conversation, and of course, spontaneous bursts of song. She had a knack for making everyone feel special, seen, and loved. She found so much joy in the simple things: tending to her garden, reading a good book (usually a historical novel!), and spending time with her beloved cat, Socrates. She was a fiercely independent woman, with a sharp wit and a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She never lost her sense of humor, even when facing adversity. Marinella had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world, and her generosity knew no bounds. Marinella leaves behind a legacy of music, love, and laughter that will live on in our hearts forever. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, extended family, countless friends, and all those whose lives she touched with her extraordinary voice and even more extraordinary spirit. *Anamnisete ston Theos.* May her memory be eternal.
