Matt Salter
January 1, 1977 - March 9, 2026 (Age 49)
Matt Salter was the kind of person who lit up every room he walked into. Born on December 2, 1976, Matt grew up in London with a passion for rugby that would define much of his life. From his school days at St Dunstan's College, where he first fell in love with the game, to his professional career playing for Bristol in the Guinness Premiership and later with the London Broncos in rugby league, Matt approached everything with infectious enthusiasm and a smile that could disarm even the toughest opponent.
Off the field, Matt was all about family and friends. He met his wife Sarah at a local pub quiz night in 2005, and they married in 2010 surrounded by everyone who loved them. Together they raised two wonderful children, Jack and Emma, who were the absolute center of Matt's universe. He coached their youth rugby teams, taught them to fish at his favorite spot by the river, and never missed a school play or soccer match. His laugh was the loudest in the stands, and his encouragement meant everything to his kids.
What many people didn't know about Matt was his incredible talent for baking. Every Sunday morning, the house would fill with the smell of fresh bread or his famous chocolate chip cookies. He'd often bring batches to team practices or to neighbors just because. Matt believed in the simple joys of life - a perfectly executed pass, a cold pint after a match, watching the sunrise with a cup of tea, or getting lost in a good book on rainy afternoons.
Matt passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, after a brief illness. He faced it all with the same courage and humor that defined his life. In his final weeks, he was surrounded by Sarah, Jack, Emma, and the countless friends whose lives he touched. Matt leaves behind not just memories of brilliant rugby plays, but of impromptu backyard barbecues, terrible dad jokes that made everyone groan, and an unwavering kindness that made everyone feel like they mattered. The world feels a little dimmer without his light, but we're all better for having known him. Matt Salter - husband, father, friend, and teammate - will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
