Maya Belenkaya

January 1, 1932 - April 28, 2026 (Age 94)

It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the incredible woman that Maya Petrovna Belenkaya was. Born on January 1st, 1932, she left us on April 28th, 2026, leaving a hole in our lives that will never quite be filled. Most people will remember her as a three-time Soviet national champion figure skater, a testament to her incredible dedication and grace on the ice. But for those of us who knew her, she was so much more than a medal-winner; she was a whirlwind of warmth, laughter, and a stubborn refusal to take anything too seriously. I’ll always remember the time she tried to teach me to skate, resulting in a spectacular tumble and a fit of giggles that echoed across the rink – she just couldn’t help but find the joy in everything, even my disastrous attempts. Maya’s life was built on a foundation of fierce love and family. She adored her brother, Boris, and their bond was a constant source of strength and amusement. Later in life, she found a new kind of joy in her children and grandchildren, showering them with her characteristic generosity and a never-ending supply of homemade pierogi. She’d spend hours in the kitchen, humming Russian folk songs as she rolled dough, always insisting on teaching everyone the proper way to fold a dumpling – a skill, I’m sure, she’d been perfecting since she was a little girl. She carried the warmth of her family with her everywhere, radiating a quiet, comforting presence. Beyond the ice and the family, Maya had a deep love for music and literature. She could recite poetry in Russian with breathtaking beauty and always had a record player spinning – usually something by Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff. She found solace and beauty in the simple things: a perfectly brewed cup of tea, a sunny afternoon spent reading, or a long conversation with a friend. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, offering a listening ear and a genuine smile to anyone who needed it. She truly believed in the power of kindness, and she lived her life accordingly. Maya’s legacy isn’t just in the records she set, but in the countless lives she touched. She taught us the importance of perseverance, the beauty of embracing joy, and the enduring power of love. She was a force of nature, a vibrant spirit, and a truly remarkable woman. We will miss her terribly, but we will carry her memory – and her infectious laughter – in our hearts forever.
