Md. Anwarul Azim Arif
January 1, 1952 - March 19, 2026 (Age 74)
It’s with a heart overflowing with love and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Md. Anwarul Azim Arif, on March 19th, 2026. Born on January 1st, 1951, Anwar was more than just a career – he was a force of kindness, a brilliant mind, and the most wonderfully thoughtful man I’ve ever known. I remember when we first met, he immediately had this twinkle in his eye and a genuine interest in everything I was saying, a quality that defined his entire life. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, and that’s a legacy he leaves behind that will truly resonate. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Farida, and a truly amazing father to his children and grandchildren – their laughter and joy were a constant source of his happiness.
Anwar’s life was dedicated to service, first as a respected academic administrator and banker, and later as the Vice-Chancellor of both the University of Chittagong and the International Islamic University Chittagong. He approached every role with a deep commitment to education and progress, always striving to create opportunities for others. I’ll never forget his passion for Islamic finance, a field he championed with such dedication, and his role as Chairman of Social Islami Bank Limited – he truly believed in the power of responsible banking. He was also a vital part of the Central Shariah Board, ensuring the integrity and ethical foundations of Islamic banking in Bangladesh. Beyond his professional achievements, Anwar found immense joy in simple things: a perfectly brewed cup of tea, a spirited debate about philosophy, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
But more than his titles and accomplishments, Anwar will be remembered for the impact he had on the lives of those around him. He had a remarkable ability to inspire and mentor, always encouraging others to reach their full potential. He was a patient listener, a wise counselor, and a friend who offered unwavering support. He possessed a quiet strength and a gentle spirit that drew people to him. He always had a smile and a kind word, and his generosity knew no bounds.
Anwar’s absence leaves a void that can never truly be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. We will miss his warmth, his wisdom, and his unwavering belief in the good of humanity. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love he so freely gave.
