Michael O. Rabin
January 1, 1932 - April 16, 2026 (Age 94)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Michael. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Michael O. Rabin, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at the age of 94. He was a man of incredible intellect, quiet humor, and a warmth that drew everyone around him in. I remember when we first met – he was explaining some incredibly complex mathematical concept with such genuine enthusiasm, his eyes sparkling, and I was completely captivated, not just by the math, but by the man himself. He had this way of making everything fascinating, whether it was a prime number or a perfectly ripe tomato from the garden. He wasn’t one for grand gestures, but his love was a constant, steady presence, woven into the fabric of our lives.
Michael was, of course, a brilliant mind. His work in mathematics and computer science, particularly the Miller-Rabin primality test, earned him international recognition and the prestigious Turing Award. But to us, he was simply Dad, Grandpa, and my dearest Michael. He loved nothing more than a lively debate, a good crossword puzzle, and spending time with his family. Sunday dinners at his house were legendary – filled with laughter, delicious food (he made the *best* challah!), and endless discussions about everything and nothing. He was a devoted husband to me, a loving father to his children, and a doting grandfather who always had a silly joke or a fascinating fact ready for his grandchildren. He taught us the importance of curiosity, the beauty of logic, and the power of a good cup of tea.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and family life, Michael found joy in the simple things. He was an avid gardener, nurturing his roses with the same care and precision he applied to his research. He loved classical music, particularly Bach, and could often be found humming along while he worked. He was a quiet observer, always taking in the world around him with a thoughtful gaze. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life, treating everyone with respect and kindness.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, love, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and countless friends and colleagues. Though he may be gone, his spirit will live on in the memories we cherish and the lessons he taught us. We’ll miss your smile, your wisdom, and your unwavering love, Michael. May you rest in peace.
