Michael Tilson Thomas
January 1, 1945 - April 24, 2026 (Age 81)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Michael. Even knowing it was coming, after his brave fight with glioblastoma, feels…impossible. He was such a force of life, a whirlwind of energy and passion that filled every room he entered. I remember visiting him as a kid, and his house was *always* buzzing – not just with music, though there was always that, glorious and spilling out from every corner – but with interesting people, lively conversation, and a sense that anything was possible. He had this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important person in the world, truly *seeing* you and listening with genuine curiosity.
Michael wasn’t just a conductor, a composer, a pianist – he was a storyteller. He didn’t just play the notes on the page; he unlocked the emotions *behind* them, sharing them with everyone in the audience. He believed so fiercely in nurturing young musicians, and founding the New World Symphony was a testament to that. He wasn’t interested in just creating great performances, he wanted to build a future for classical music, a future filled with innovation and inclusivity. And he did. He really, truly did. He spoke often and with such love about his parents, and how their encouragement shaped him, and he carried that forward, always wanting to lift others up.
Beyond the concert halls and accolades, Michael had a playful side, a real zest for life. He loved exploring new technologies, always fascinated by how they could enhance and expand the musical experience. He was a devoted fan of jazz, and a surprisingly good cook! He’d throw these incredible parties, filled with laughter and good food, where everyone felt welcome. He found joy in the simple things, a beautiful sunset, a good book, a lively debate.
The music world has lost a giant, yes, but we’ve lost something even more profound: a kind, generous, and brilliantly imaginative soul. He touched so many lives, inspiring countless musicians and music lovers alike. His legacy will live on, not just in the recordings and scores he leaves behind, but in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We’ll miss his infectious laugh, his twinkling eyes, and the way he made us all believe in the power of music.
