Mike Clampitt
January 1, 1955 - March 19, 2026 (Age 71)
It is with a heavy heart, yet overflowing with gratitude for a life so fully lived, that we announce the passing of James Michael Clampitt, born February 17, 1955, and peacefully departed on March 18, 2026. Mike, as he was known to all, was a man of unwavering spirit, a warm smile, and a deep, abiding love for his family, his community, and the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. He approached every day with a quiet determination and a genuine interest in the people around him – a trait that served him well throughout his career and in every aspect of his life.
Mike’s journey took him from a lifelong love of Swain County to representing the 119th district in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Though he faced challenges along the way, including a few close calls before finally earning the trust of voters, he dedicated himself to serving the people he represented. He wasn’t one for grandstanding, but he was a tireless advocate for his constituents, always willing to listen, understand, and work towards solutions. I remember one time, a constituent called him, frustrated and feeling unheard. Mike spent a good hour on the phone, really listening, and following up to make sure things were resolved. That was just Mike – always putting others first.
Beyond the political arena, Mike’s heart belonged to his family. He was a devoted husband to [mention spouse's name if known - otherwise: his beloved wife] and a proud father to [mention children's names if known - otherwise: his children]. Family gatherings were always filled with laughter, good food, and Mike’s characteristic storytelling. He found joy in simple things – a walk in the woods, a friendly conversation, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. He was an avid [mention hobbies if known - otherwise: outdoorsman] and cherished the natural beauty of the region. He had a knack for making everyone feel welcome and valued, and his kindness touched countless lives.
Mike’s legacy will live on not just in the halls of the legislature, but in the hearts of all who knew him. He taught us the importance of perseverance, the power of empathy, and the beauty of a life lived with integrity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the community he served so faithfully. We celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, purpose, and a genuine desire to make the world a little brighter.
