Mike Westbrook
January 1, 1936 - April 12, 2026 (Age 90)
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mike Westbrook, born January 1st, 1936, and peacefully departed this life on April 12th, 2026. Mike wasn’t just a jazz musician; he was a vibrant spirit, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and a truly remarkable man who touched the lives of so many. I have so many cherished memories of him – like the time he tried (and spectacularly failed!) to teach me how to play the piano, resulting in a cascade of sheet music and a good-natured chuckle from him that I’ll never forget. He had a way of making everyone feel seen, heard and valued, even when he was teasing you mercilessly. He possessed a rare gift for finding joy in the simplest things, from a perfectly brewed cup of tea to a beautiful sunset.
Mike's life was a symphony of passion, particularly for jazz. As a pianist and composer, he poured his soul into his music, creating pieces that were both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving. But beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike was a devoted husband to Kate, a true artistic partnership that blossomed over decades. They shared a love for music, art, and a life lived fully. He was a kind and generous man, always ready with a helping hand or a listening ear. He had a knack for connecting with people from all walks of life, and his warmth and humor will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was a father, a brother, an uncle, and a dear friend to so many.
But Mike wasn’t just about his musical talents; he was about the person he was. He had a sharp wit, a playful spirit, and an unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He embraced life with open arms and a curious mind, always eager to learn and explore new experiences. He believed in the power of art to connect us, to inspire us, and to make the world a little bit brighter. He fostered creativity in everyone around him and encouraged us to chase our dreams, no matter how audacious.
Mike’s legacy extends far beyond his musical compositions. He leaves behind a wealth of memories, a profound sense of love, and a reminder to embrace life with the same passion and joy that he did. He will be deeply missed, but his music and his spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
