Mukhtar Shakhanov
January 1, 1943 - April 20, 2026 (Age 83)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Mukhtar. He was, quite simply, a force of nature – a whirlwind of passionate words, twinkling eyes, and a laugh that could fill a room and chase away any shadow. Born on January 1st, 1943, Mukhtar lived a life overflowing with creativity, dedication, and a deep, abiding love for his country and its people. I first met him years ago at a small literary gathering, and even then, his energy was palpable. He’d be animatedly debating poetry with everyone, offering a thoughtful critique one moment and a booming, encouraging cheer the next. He had this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important person in the world, just by listening – truly listening – to what you had to say.
Mukhtar’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of poetry, politics, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. He poured his heart and soul into his writing, crafting verses that captured the spirit of Kazakhstan with such raw honesty and breathtaking beauty. Serving as an MP and later as Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan was important to him, a way to give back and advocate for the things he believed in, but it always felt secondary to his art. He was fiercely proud of his heritage, of the Kazakh language and culture, and he dedicated so much of his time to preserving and promoting it. I’ll never forget his insistence on teaching me a few phrases in Kazakh – a small gesture that felt monumental, a testament to his generosity and desire to share his world. And of course, there was Jalyn, the magazine he so passionately edited, a beacon for Kazakh literature.
But beyond the accolades and the public service, Mukhtar was, at his core, a deeply loving husband to his beloved wife, Aigul, and a devoted father to his children and grandchildren. He adored them fiercely, and their faces lit up whenever he was around. He was the kind of grandfather who’d build elaborate Lego castles, tell fantastical stories, and patiently explain the intricacies of a complex poem – always with a twinkle in his eye. He had this incredible knack for making everyone feel seen and valued, for nurturing the best in those around him.
Mukhtar’s impact extended far beyond his immediate family and circle of friends. He inspired countless writers, artists, and thinkers with his unwavering commitment to his craft and his belief in the power of words. He leaves behind a legacy of beauty, of passion, and of a life lived with an open heart. We will miss his laughter, his wisdom, and his unforgettable spirit terribly. Rest in peace, my dear Mukhtar.
