Nancy W. Cook
January 1, 1937 - March 24, 2026 (Age 89)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Nancy W. Cook, but honestly, a part of us feels like she’s just slipped off to find a really good knitting project and a comfy armchair. Nancy was a force of nature, a whirlwind of determination and genuine kindness, and she left an imprint on all of us who were lucky enough to know her. I met her back in college – she was instantly recognizable with her bright red lipstick and a twinkle in her eye that promised adventure. She always had a story to tell, a quick wit, and a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. We spent countless hours debating politics (she was always wonderfully stubborn!), laughing until our sides hurt, and just enjoying each other’s company.
Nancy’s career as a Senator for Delaware was remarkable, especially considering the circumstances – stepping into her husband Allen’s seat after his tragic passing was a monumental task, and she tackled it with grace and unwavering dedication. But beyond the political arena, that’s who I knew her to be: a devoted wife, a loving mother to Sarah and Michael, and a fiercely loyal friend. She adored her family above all else, and her house was always filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies and the sound of lively conversation. She’d spend hours helping Sarah with her art projects, patiently teaching Michael how to fish, and always, always making time for a phone call or a visit.
She found joy in the simple things – tending to her beautiful garden, reading a good book, and volunteering at the local animal shelter. She had a passion for history and a surprisingly competitive streak when it came to board games. But more than anything, Nancy loved people. She had an incredible ability to connect with anyone she met, offering a listening ear, a warm smile, and a genuine belief in the good in others. She truly made a difference in the lives of so many, whether through her work in the Senate or her quiet acts of kindness.
After her time in the Senate, she served with distinction as the Kent County Register of Wills, a role that allowed her to connect with families during a difficult time, offering support and guidance with a gentle touch. Nancy’s legacy isn’t just in the laws she helped shape, but in the countless lives she touched with her warmth, her strength, and her unwavering spirit. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in our hearts forever.
