Nicky Smith (English footballer)|Nicky Smith

January 1, 1969 - April 15, 2026 (Age 57)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Nicky Smith. He left us far too soon, on April 15th, 2026, leaving a hole in all our hearts that will be impossible to fill. Nicky, born January 28th, 1969, was so much more than just a footballer – though goodness, he was a brilliant one! I remember watching him play for Colchester United as a kid, mesmerized by his skill and determination. He had this incredible grit, this never-say-die attitude that was infectious. Even off the pitch, he was like that. I recall one time, we were camping and a sudden downpour soaked everything. Most of us were grumbling, but Nicky just laughed, grabbed a tarp, and got to work, making sure everyone stayed dry and spirits were high. That was Nicky – always thinking of others, always finding the positive, even in a soggy situation. Family was everything to Nicky. He adored his wife, Sarah, and his kids, and his pride in them shone through in everything he did. He was the kind of dad who’d drop anything to be at a school play or a football match, cheering louder than anyone. He was a devoted son and brother, always there with a listening ear and a helping hand. Beyond his immediate family, Nicky had a huge circle of friends, forged through years of playing football and his dedication to the police force. He was a true friend, loyal and dependable, the kind you could always count on. And let’s not forget his passion for the England police team – captaining, coaching, and managing them was a real source of pride and joy for him. After his professional career, Nicky poured his energy into managing AFC Sudbury, where he instilled his passion and dedication into the team. He wasn’t just a manager; he was a mentor, a motivator, and a friend to every player. He had a knack for spotting potential and bringing out the best in people. He found so much satisfaction in seeing young players develop and achieve their goals. He loved a good game of darts too, and was surprisingly competitive! He always had a twinkle in his eye and a ready smile, making him a joy to be around. Nicky’s impact on everyone who knew him was profound. He taught us the importance of hard work, loyalty, and always keeping a positive attitude. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication. We’ll miss his laughter, his warmth, and his incredible spirit. Rest easy, Nicky. You were loved more than words can say.
