Nikolay Kondakov

January 1, 1950 - March 7, 2026 (Age 76)

It’s hard to believe he’s really gone. Nikolay Yakovlevich Kondakov, my Nikolay, slipped away on March 7th, at the age of 76. Seventy-six years of a life filled with a quiet strength, a dry wit, and a surprising amount of stubborn optimism. I met him through a mutual friend, and from the very first conversation, I knew he was someone special – a man who genuinely listened, who remembered the smallest details about you, and who always had a thoughtful, slightly bemused expression on his face. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of steady, reliable kindness. I’ll always remember the time he painstakingly built a miniature replica of the Kremlin out of sugar cubes for my daughter – it was utterly ridiculous, of course, but the effort and the love behind it were breathtaking. Nikolay’s career as a politician – a member of the State Duma from 1994 to 1996 – was important to him, a way he felt he could contribute to his country. But for Nikolay, life wasn’t about titles or power. It was about the simple things: a perfectly brewed cup of tea, a good book (he devoured historical biographies), and spending time with his family. He adored his wife, Elena, and their children, Dimitri and Anya, and he was the most devoted grandfather to little Leo. He’d spend hours patiently teaching Leo to build with LEGOs, completely absorbed in the process, and beaming with pride when Leo finally managed to create something resembling a spaceship. He had a real passion for classical music – particularly Rachmaninoff – and could often be found listening to records, a gentle smile playing on his lips. He also loved tending to his small garden, a riot of colorful flowers and herbs that he meticulously cared for. More than anything, though, he loved people. He had a knack for making everyone feel seen and valued, offering a word of encouragement or a listening ear without judgment. He genuinely cared about the well-being of his community and always tried to do what he believed was right, even when it wasn’t easy. Nikolay leaves behind a legacy of quiet dignity, unwavering loyalty, and a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life. He may be gone, but the warmth of his spirit, and the countless small acts of kindness he performed, will remain with us always. We will miss you terribly, my dear Nikolay.
