Peeter Simm
January 1, 1953 - March 13, 2026 (Age 73)
Peeter Simm, our beloved friend, brother, and mentor, left us on March 13th, 2026, after a life rich with passion and purpose. Born in the heart of Kiviõli on February 24th, 1953, he carried the spirit of Estonia with him always. We'll always remember his infectious laugh, the way he'd light up when talking about his latest project, or the deep, thoughtful gaze he'd get when analyzing a scene. He wasn't just a director; he was a storyteller who saw the world with such unique clarity and emotion. His journey began at VGIK, where he honed his craft, but his true education came from life itself – observing people, capturing fleeting moments of beauty and truth on screen. He poured his soul into every frame, whether it was the intimate drama of "Georg" or the sweeping landscapes of "On the Water," always striving to connect with the human experience.
Peeter's greatest joy, beyond the art of filmmaking, was found in the people who mattered most. He was a devoted husband, a loving father whose gentle wisdom guided his children, and a cherished uncle whose stories and presence were a constant comfort. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued, whether sharing a quiet meal, debating the merits of a film theory, or simply offering a listening ear. His home was always open, filled with the warmth of his company and the quiet strength of his character. He taught us all about perseverance, about finding beauty in the everyday, and about the profound responsibility of telling a story that resonates.
The world feels quieter now, without Peeter's brilliant mind and generous spirit. He touched countless lives through his films, which became windows into the Estonian soul and universal human truths. He inspired generations of filmmakers and left an indelible mark on cinema. But more than that, he touched us personally. He was a pillar of support, a source of inspiration, and a friend whose kindness and wisdom we will forever cherish. We will miss his voice, his insights, and the unique light he brought
