Peter Morris (politician)|Peter Morris

January 1, 1933 - April 26, 2026 (Age 93)

Peter Morris was many things to many people—a dedicated public servant, a beloved father and grandfather, a man of integrity who never lost sight of the people he served. To those of us who knew him best, he was simply Dad, Grandpa, Peter—the man who walked through the door each evening with a tired smile and a story to share, who made everyone around him feel like they mattered. Born on New Year's Day in 1933, Peter grew up believing that public service was a privilege, not a position. He served the people of his constituency for over two decades, from 1972 to 1998, always answering the door with the same genuine warmth whether his visitor was a concerned constituent or a curious neighbor. His time as Minister for Transport from 1983 to 1987 was perhaps his proudest professional achievement—not for the title, but for the tangible ways he could improve people's daily lives. He used to say that the best policy came from listening, really listening, to what people needed. But Peter's life was never just about politics. He was a man of unexpected joys. He loved nothing more than Sunday mornings in the garden, his hands in the soil, growing tomatoes that he swore were the best in the neighborhood. He was a devoted fan of his beloved footy team, calling games with such enthusiasm that neighbors would laugh and wave from across the fence. His laugh was infectious, his storytelling legendary, and he never met a stranger—only friends he hadn't yet made. Peter's greatest legacy isn't written in parliamentary records or policy documents. It's written in the lives he touched, the young people he mentored, the colleagues who became lifelong friends, and the family who adored him. He is survived by his loving family, who will carry his kindness, his humor, and his unwavering belief in the goodness of people forward into every day without him. He taught us all that being a good person is the most important job of all. We'll miss you, Peter—more than words can say.
