Professor Robert "Bob" Harrison
May 20, 1938 - February 3, 2026 (Age 87)
Ann Arbor, MI
Professor Robert "Bob" Harrison, 87, a legendary educator and poet, passed away on February 3, 2026, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For six decades, he inspired students to think deeply, write boldly, and live authentically.
Bob taught English literature at the University of Michigan from 1962 to 2010, refusing to retire until they "dragged him out." His classes were transformative experiences—part seminar, part séance, all passion. Former students include two Pulitzer Prize winners and countless grateful souls who found their voices in his classroom.
A published poet himself, Bob believed that "poetry is the opposite of death—it makes everything matter more." His final collection, "Late Light," was completed just weeks before his passing.
Known for his bow ties, his marginalia-filled books, and his generous spirit, Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; children Laura and Thomas; six grandchildren; and generations of students who called him mentor, friend, and hero.
