To the world, he was a formidable force on two wheels, a man who conquered the steepest climbs of the Tour de France in 1983 wearing the iconic colors of Café de Colombia. But to those of us who knew him behind the helmet, he was simply Rafa—the man with the warmest laugh, the most resilient spirit, and a heart that beat even faster than his pedaling. Rafa lived his life with the same grit and grace he showed on the mountain passes of Europe.
