Rexhep Qosja

January 1, 1937 - April 23, 2026 (Age 89)

It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Rexhep. He passed away on April 23rd, 2026, after a life overflowing with passion, intellect, and a truly remarkable kindness. Born on January 1st, 1937, Rexhep was a force of nature – a whirlwind of opinions, a lover of strong coffee, and a man who could debate anything with a twinkle in his eye. I’ll always remember the time he tried to teach me how to make burek, resulting in a flour-covered kitchen and a lot of laughter. He wasn’t a patient teacher, bless his heart, but he always made sure I knew I was loved, and that even a disastrous burek couldn’t diminish that. He was a brilliant man, of course, a celebrated writer and critic, and his novel, ‘Death Comes to Me from Such Eyes,’ will undoubtedly continue to resonate for generations to come. But beyond the accolades, he was simply Rexhep – a deeply loyal friend, a devoted husband, and a wonderfully eccentric uncle. Rexhep’s life was built on a foundation of love, starting with his incredible family. He adored his wife, Liriana, and their children, and grandchildren – they were the center of his world. He’d spend hours listening to their stories, offering advice (often unsolicited!), and beaming with pride. He always said his greatest accomplishment was raising a family, and you could see it in the way he looked at them. He was fiercely protective of his family, and his home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of his legendary Sunday roasts. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, a quality that extended far beyond his immediate family to encompass all those who had the good fortune to know him. He poured so much of himself into his work, meticulously studying and celebrating Albanian literature, but he also found joy in the simple things – tending to his roses, listening to classical music, and losing himself in a good book (usually with a cup of coffee, naturally). He had a genuine curiosity about the world and a deep respect for history and culture. More than anything, Rexhep wanted to leave a positive mark, to contribute to a better understanding of his country and its people. He did that, profoundly, through his writing and his unwavering belief in the power of education. Rexhep’s absence leaves a hole in all our lives, a silence where his booming laugh and insightful opinions once resided. He taught us the importance of passion, the value of family, and the beauty of a well-crafted sentence. We will miss him terribly, but we will carry his spirit with us, remembering the warmth, the wisdom, and the boundless love that defined a truly remarkable life.
