Rezvi Sheriff
January 1, 1949 - April 1, 2026 (Age 77)
It feels impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Rezvi. January 1st, 1949, brought a light into this world – a brilliant, kind, and utterly captivating light. I’ll always remember his infectious laugh, that booming sound that could fill a room and instantly make you feel at ease. Rezvi wasn’t just a doctor, a professor, or an academic; he was a force of nature, a whirlwind of passion and genuine curiosity. I have so many memories of him patiently explaining complex medical concepts to me, never making me feel foolish, always encouraging my own, admittedly clumsy, attempts at learning. He had this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room, and that’s a gift I’ll cherish forever.
Rezvi dedicated his life to medicine, first in Sri Lanka, and then with such dedication at the University of Colombo and later at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. He poured his heart and soul into his work, driven by a deep desire to help others, particularly those suffering from kidney disease – a field he truly mastered. But beyond the professional, Rezvi was a devoted husband to Vidya and a wonderfully playful and loving father to his children. He’d spend hours building elaborate Lego castles with his grandkids, completely losing himself in the process, and his face would just light up with pure joy. He loved gardening, meticulously tending to his roses, and could spend hours lost in a good book, often quoting passages at unexpected moments.
He had this remarkable way of seeing the good in everyone, of offering a word of encouragement or a helping hand without hesitation. He mentored countless young doctors, always emphasizing the importance of compassion and empathy alongside scientific knowledge. Rezvi’s impact extended far beyond the hospital walls; he was a pillar of his community, a respected elder, and a truly good man. He taught us the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the simple pleasure of a perfectly brewed cup of tea.
Rezvi, you left an indelible mark on all our lives. Your warmth, your wisdom, and your unwavering kindness will be deeply missed. We’ll carry your memory with us, always striving to live with the same grace and generosity that you exemplified. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
