Robert Cluck
January 1, 1939 - April 18, 2026 (Age 87)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Robert, but honestly, a part of him feels like he’s always just… there, quietly observing with that twinkle in his eye. Born January 1st, 1939, Robert – or “Bob” as everyone knew him – lived a life overflowing with kindness, a surprising amount of stubbornness, and a genuine love for this little corner of Texas. I remember when he first told me about running for mayor, he just shrugged and said, “Someone’s gotta do it.” That was Bob – always practical, always willing to step up, and always believing he could make a difference. He served as mayor of Arlington from 2003 to 2015, a period he talked about with such pride, not for the title, but for the people he got to work with and the small improvements he felt he could make.
Growing up, Bob was the most wonderfully goofy uncle. He’d build elaborate Lego castles that inevitably collapsed, and he always had a silly joke ready, usually involving a chicken – a nod to his family’s farm roots, of course. He adored his family fiercely; his wife, Mary, was his rock, and their kids and grandkids were the center of his world. He’d spend hours patiently teaching the little ones how to fish, even if it meant getting covered in mud himself. Beyond the politics and the hospital, Bob was a passionate gardener – his roses were legendary, and he took immense pride in nurturing them. He also loved a good crossword puzzle and could always be found with a book in his hand, usually something historical or about a fascinating person.
But more than anything, Bob was about connection. He had a knack for making people feel seen and valued. He remembered everyone’s name, asked about their families, and genuinely listened when you needed to talk. He mentored countless young people in Arlington, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and to serve their community. He wasn’t a flashy politician; he was just a good, honest man who cared deeply about the people around him. His time at Arlington Memorial Hospital, and before that as a dedicated obstetrician-gynecologist, showed his compassionate heart and his commitment to helping others.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Mary, his children, grandchildren, and a whole community of friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity. He leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and a whole lot of laughter. We’ll miss his quiet wisdom, his goofy grin, and the simple way he reminded us to appreciate the small joys in life. Rest in peace, Bob.
