Rory O'Hanlon

January 1, 1934 - April 1, 2026 (Age 92)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Rory O’Hanlon. He left us peacefully on March 31st, 2026, at the grand old age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of service, laughter, and a whole lot of love. Born on January 1st, 1934, Rory was a Cavan man through and through, and he carried that pride with him everywhere he went. I remember once, we were at a hurling match – he knew absolutely nothing about hurling, bless him – but he was cheering louder than anyone, decked out in the county colours, just because it was “good for the lads.” That was Rory in a nutshell: always supportive, always enthusiastic, and always ready to lend a hand. Rory’s life was one of dedication, both to his country and to his family. His years as a TD for Cavan-Monaghan, and his time serving as Minister for Health, the Environment, and even as Ceann Comhairle – a role he took to with such grace and good humour – are well documented. But for those of us who knew him best, it was the Rory who loved a good pint of Guinness, a lively debate around the kitchen table, and a walk in the Monaghan hills that truly shone. He was a devoted husband to his beloved Mary, and a wonderful father and grandfather. I’ll never forget the twinkle in his eye when his grandchildren would come to visit, and the stories he’d tell them, full of Irish folklore and mischievous tales. He was the heart of our family, a constant source of warmth and wisdom. Beyond politics, Rory had a quiet passion for gardening. He could coax the most stubborn rose bush into bloom, and his vegetable patch was the envy of the neighbourhood. He found such joy in nurturing life, in watching things grow. And that’s really what Rory was about – nurturing people, helping things grow. He had a knack for making everyone feel seen and valued, for finding the good in every situation. He touched so many lives with his kindness, his integrity, and his genuine concern for others. We’ll miss his booming laugh, his quick wit, and his unwavering optimism. The world feels a little quieter, a little less bright, without him. But we’ll carry his memory in our hearts, and strive to live our lives with the same grace, dedication, and love that he showed us every single day. Rest in peace, Rory. You were one of a kind.
