Seán Barrett (politician)|Seán Barrett

January 1, 1945 - April 7, 2026 (Age 81)

Seán, my dear friend and brother-in-arms, we gather today with hearts both heavy and full, celebrating a life that burned so brightly it left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He wasn't just a politician; he was our Seán – the man who could light up a room with his infectious laugh, the one who’d drop everything to help a neighbour or a stranger in need. He had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, a gift that served him so well in the halls of power and in the quiet corners of his beloved garden. Seán’s greatest joy, I believe, was found in the simple things. He’d often talk, with genuine warmth, about the peace he found tending his roses or the sheer delight of a perfect Sunday roast cooked slowly for family. Music was his other great passion, that deep, resonant voice he’d occasionally share, filling our kitchen with unexpected, soulful melodies. He lived for connection – whether it was deep, political debate over a pint, sharing a quiet moment with his wife, or watching his grandchildren’s faces light up at the sight of a new puppy. He was the rock, the steady hand, the unwavering supporter who believed fiercely in the goodness of people and the power of community. His service, as Minister for Education and Defence, was marked by that same integrity and dedication. He fought tirelessly for the things he believed in, always with a practical, grounded approach. He understood the weight of responsibility, yet never lost sight of the human faces behind the policies. He touched countless lives, not just through legislation, but through the quiet kindness he showed everyone. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a colleague, and a friend who embodied grace and strength. We will miss his wisdom, his humour, and that unmistakable presence. He lived a life of purpose, filled with love and laughter, and we are infinitely richer for having known him. Rest easy, dear Seán. Your light will never fade.
