Seán Ó Laoire

January 1, 1947 - April 8, 2026 (Age 79)

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Seán Ó Laoire, who peacefully departed this world on April 8th, 2026, at the age of 79. Seán was a truly remarkable man, a brilliant architect and urban designer, but more than that, he was a kind, generous, and endlessly fascinating person who touched the lives of so many. I’ll always remember his infectious laugh, that twinkle in his eye when he was discussing a particularly challenging design problem, and his unwavering belief in the power of thoughtful planning to create beautiful and functional spaces. He had this wonderful way of making everyone feel seen and heard, and he possessed a quiet strength that inspired confidence. Seán dedicated his life to shaping the built environment, establishing Murray Ó Laoire Architects in Limerick in 1979 with Hugh Murray. His career was marked by a passion for creating spaces that were both aesthetically pleasing and deeply connected to their communities. I remember visiting one of his projects early in his career and being completely captivated by how he seamlessly blended modern design with traditional elements – a testament to his deep respect for Irish heritage. Beyond the professional realm, Seán was a devoted family man. He cherished his wife, Mary, and their children, and their grandchildren – his family was the heart of his world. He fostered a home filled with warmth, laughter, and a never-ending supply of stories. He also had a real love for the simple things: a good book, a long walk in the countryside, and a perfectly brewed cup of tea. He was a keen observer of the world around him, always noticing the details – the way the light fell on a building, the rhythm of a street, the stories etched into the faces of people passing by. He believed in the importance of creating spaces that fostered connection and community, and that belief guided his work and his life. Seán’s impact extended far beyond the buildings he designed; he had a knack for mentoring young architects and inspiring them to think creatively and ethically. Seán may be gone, but his legacy will live on in the spaces he helped create and in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his beloved Mary, his children, grandchildren, and countless friends and colleagues. He taught us the importance of beauty, purpose, and connection – lessons that will continue to guide us long after his passing. Rest in peace, dear Seán. You were a true inspiration.
