Sergei Stadler

January 1, 1963 - April 21, 2026 (Age 63)

It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Sergei. Born on January 1st, 1963, he always felt like a bit of a New Year’s miracle – full of promise and a spark that could light up a room. For those who knew him as Sergei Valentinovich Stadler, the renowned violinist and conductor, you understood that the artistry wasn’t just a profession, it *was* him. But for those of us lucky enough to know him as simply Sergei, he was so much more. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a friend who always had time for a story, a laugh, or just a quiet moment of connection. I remember once, during a particularly stressful tour with the orchestra, he pulled me aside and, instead of talking shop, showed me a tiny, perfectly carved wooden bird he’d made. That was Sergei – finding beauty and peace in the smallest things, and wanting to share it with everyone around him. Music wasn’t just Sergei’s life, it was his language. He spoke through the rise and fall of a melody, the passion of a crescendo. As Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, he poured his heart and soul into every performance, and you could feel it. But even away from the concert hall, music was always present. He’d often be found tinkering with instruments, composing late into the night, or simply listening, truly *listening*, to the world around him. He had this incredible ability to hear the music in everything – the rain, the wind, even the bustling city streets. And he loved sharing that with his family; countless evenings were filled with impromptu concerts and singalongs. He touched so many lives, not just through his music, but through his kindness and generosity. He mentored countless young musicians, always encouraging them to find their own voice and pursue their dreams. He had a genuine warmth that drew people to him, and a quiet strength that inspired confidence. He believed in the power of art to heal and connect, and he lived that belief every single day. He leaves behind a legacy of beautiful music, of course, but more importantly, a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his craft and to the people he cherished. Sergei passed away on April 21st, 2026, and the world feels a little quieter without his music. He will be deeply missed by his wife, his children, his extended family, and the countless friends and colleagues whose lives he enriched. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing that his music will continue to resonate, and his spirit will live on in every note.
