Sherig-ool Oorzhak

January 1, 1943 - April 9, 2026 (Age 83)

It feels impossible to write this, to truly capture the essence of Sherig-ool. He was, quite simply, a force of nature – a quiet, steady strength wrapped in a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Born on January 1st, 1943, he lived a life overflowing with purpose and, more importantly, with love. I met Sherig-ool many years ago, and I was immediately struck by his genuine warmth. He had this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room, even if he’d just spent the last hour wrestling with a particularly stubborn Tuvan throat singing piece. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures, but of small, thoughtful acts – a perfectly brewed cup of tea, a listening ear, a perfectly timed joke that always managed to lift your spirits. I’ll never forget the time he tried to teach me to play the dombra, resulting in a cacophony of sound that nearly drove my grandmother, Baba Anya, to tears – he just laughed and said, “It’s the spirit, not the skill!” Sherig-ool’s dedication to Tuva was legendary, and for twenty-one years, he served as its head, guiding the republic with wisdom and a deep, abiding love for his people. He wasn’t just a politician; he was a custodian of Tuvan culture and traditions, fiercely protective of its heritage. But beyond the official role, he was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Irina, and a wonderfully playful and patient father to his children and grandchildren. He instilled in them a love of their roots, a respect for their history, and a healthy dose of Tuvan humor. He’d spend hours telling stories of his childhood, of the vast, windswept steppes and the ancient songs of his ancestors – stories that felt as timeless as the mountains themselves. His passion for Tuvan music and dance was infectious. He could often be found at local celebrations, leading the dances with a surprisingly energetic step, always encouraging everyone to join in. He truly believed in the power of culture to unite and uplift, and he dedicated himself to preserving and promoting it throughout his life. More than anything, Sherig-ool had a remarkable gift for connecting with people – he saw the good in everyone and had a way of making you feel valued and appreciated. He leaves behind a legacy of service, of love, and of a deep and abiding connection to his homeland. Sherig-ool Dizizhikovich Oorzhak may be gone, but the warmth of his spirit, the echoes of his laughter, and the strength of his love will forever resonate within the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
