Shigeaki Mori
January 1, 1938 - March 17, 2026 (Age 88)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Shigeaki. He left us peacefully on March 17th, 2026, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering compassion, and a deep, abiding love for his family and his city. To know Shigeaki was to know a man of gentle humor, a twinkle in his eye, and a heart overflowing with stories. I’ll always remember the time he tried to teach me origami – my paper cranes looked more like crumpled birds, but he just laughed and patiently showed me again, and again, until I finally got it (sort of!). That was Shigeaki – endlessly patient, always encouraging, and finding joy in the simple things.
Shigeaki’s life was marked by both profound loss and remarkable resilience. As a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, he carried a weight that few could comprehend. Yet, he chose not to be defined by that tragedy, but rather to dedicate his life to understanding it and ensuring its lessons were never forgotten. His work as a historian, particularly his research into the experiences of Allied prisoners of war during the war, was a testament to his commitment to truth and reconciliation. Many of you will remember the incredible moment when he embraced President Obama during his visit to Hiroshima – a hug that spoke volumes about healing, forgiveness, and the shared humanity that transcends borders and conflicts. He was a bridge, a symbol of hope, and a reminder that even after unimaginable devastation, compassion can prevail.
Family was everything to Shigeaki. He cherished his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, showering them with love, wisdom, and a steady presence. Sunday dinners at his house were legendary – filled with laughter, delicious food, and the comforting feeling of belonging. He was the kind of grandfather who always had a story to tell, a piece of advice to offer, and a warm hug to give. He instilled in his family a deep respect for history, a commitment to peace, and the importance of kindness in a world that often feels unkind.
Shigeaki Mori will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. He leaves behind a world a little brighter, a little more understanding, and a little more hopeful because he was in it. We’ll remember his gentle spirit, his unwavering dedication, and the enduring power of his message: that even in the face of unimaginable darkness, the light of humanity can always shine through. Rest in peace, dear Shigeaki.
