Silvino Louro
January 1, 1959 - March 20, 2026 (Age 67)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Silvino. Born on January 1st, 1959, he truly lived a life full of passion, dedication, and a whole lot of heart. Most people knew him as Silvino, the goalkeeper – a legend on the pitch for Vitória Setúbal, Benfica, and even representing Portugal. But to us, he was simply Dad, Vô (Grandpa), and a friend who always had a story, a laugh, and a comforting presence. I remember being a little kid, completely mesmerized watching him train, the way he commanded the goal with such confidence. He always said a goalkeeper wasn’t just about reflexes, but about reading the game, about being a leader. He lived by that, on and off the field.
Silvino didn’t just *play* football, he breathed it. Twenty-one seasons in the Primeira Liga – 408 appearances! – that’s a testament to his incredible skill and unwavering commitment. But even after hanging up his gloves (eventually, in his 40s!), he couldn’t stay away. He found a new joy in coaching, and his time working alongside José Mourinho was something he was incredibly proud of. He loved sharing his knowledge, mentoring young players, and seeing them succeed. But beyond football, he loved a good meal with family, a quiet evening with a book, and tending to his garden. He had the greenest thumb I’ve ever known!
He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued. He wasn’t a man of many words, but when he spoke, people listened. He had this quiet strength, a gentle wisdom that drew people to him. He was fiercely proud of his family – his wife, his children, his grandchildren – and we were all fiercely proud of him. He taught us the importance of hard work, integrity, and always, *always* believing in yourself. He’d always say, “A vida é uma luta, mas vale a pena” – life is a struggle, but it’s worth it.
Silvino passed away on March 20th, 2026, leaving a void in our lives that will never truly be filled. But his spirit, his passion, and his love will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He touched so many lives, not just through football, but through his kindness, his generosity, and his unwavering love. We’ll miss his smile, his stories, and his warm embrace more than words can say. Rest peacefully, Silvino. You were truly one of a kind.
