Sophie Flamand
January 1, 1965 - April 18, 2026 (Age 61)
It’s hard to believe I’m writing this, trying to capture a life as vibrant and full as Sophie’s in just a few words. Sophie Flamand left us on April 18th, 2026, but the stories she told, and the way she lived, will echo for so much longer. Born on January 1st, 1965, she always said starting the year with a bang suited her perfectly – and it did. She approached everything with a curious energy, a mischievous glint in her eye, and a genuine desire to understand the world and the people in it. I remember one time, we were at a ridiculously formal dinner, and she somehow managed to convince the waiter she was researching the proper way to serve escargots for a novel. He spent a good ten minutes detailing the technique while everyone else was trying not to laugh! That was Sophie – always observing, always questioning, always finding the story.
Sophie was, of course, a gifted writer and journalist. Her words had a way of cutting through the noise and getting to the heart of things, whether she was reporting on current events or crafting a beautiful, poignant story. But more than her professional life, she was a devoted daughter, sister, and friend. Family meant everything to her. She spoke often and with such love about her parents, and her bond with her siblings was something truly special. She had this incredible ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, offering a listening ear, a warm hug, and always, *always*, a perfectly timed witty remark. She collected people the way some collect stamps – a diverse, wonderful group all drawn to her generous spirit.
What truly brought Sophie joy wasn’t just writing, but *living*. She adored wandering through antique markets, searching for forgotten treasures and imagining the stories behind them. She was a terrible, but enthusiastic, gardener, convinced she could grow anything if she talked to it enough. And she loved a good debate, fueled by strong coffee and even stronger opinions. She wasn’t afraid to challenge you, to push you to think differently, but she always did it with kindness and respect. She believed in the power of connection, of shared experiences, and of finding beauty in the everyday.
Sophie’s impact on those who knew her is immeasurable. She taught us to be brave, to be curious, and to never lose our sense of wonder. She reminded us that even in the darkest of times, there is always a story to be told, a laugh to be shared, and a reason to hope. We will miss her terribly, but we will carry her spirit with us, in every story we tell, every kindness we offer, and every moment we choose to live fully.
