Steve Maslow

January 1, 1945 - April 30, 2026 (Age 81)

Steve Maslow left us on April 27, 2026, bringing his signature warmth and wit to an end after a brave battle with cancer. Those who knew him best will remember Steve not just for his incredible talents behind the mixing board, but for the way he made everyone around him feel seen and valued. His laugh was infectious, his hugs were genuine, and his curiosity about the world never waned, even after winning three Academy Awards and crafting the soundscapes for some of our favorite films. For over four decades, Steve channeled his passion for audio into more than 200 movies, including beloved classics like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "The Empire Strikes Back." But behind the technical genius and Oscar wins was a man who genuinely loved telling stories through sound. He'd come home from long shooting days, still buzzing with excitement about capturing the perfect sound effect or helping an actor's voice come alive in a scene. Even in his later years, when he worked on "The Great Gatsby" and earned his AACTA Award, you could see the same childlike wonder he'd had since his first days in the industry. Steve cherished his family above all else. He was a devoted husband to his wife Susan, whose patience and love anchored their home, and a father to their children who grew up hearing stories about "the sound guy" who got to work with movie stars. Weekends were sacred – whether they were at their cabin in the mountains, hosting friends for barbecue, or taking drives just to hear his favorite songs on the radio. He loved gardening, claiming his tomatoes were the best because he talked to them daily, and he was always the one organizing neighborhood gatherings, remembering everyone's birthdays, and making sure no one felt alone.
