Syed Habibul Hassan
January 1, 1941 - March 9, 2026 (Age 85)
With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our beloved Syed Habibul Hassan, a man whose life was a beautiful, rolling game of passion, grace, and unwavering love. To us, he was always Uncle Habib or Baba—a fixture of gentle strength and quiet humor in our family. While the world remembers the formidable footballer who represented India at the 1960 Rome Olympics, we remember the man who came home to Hyderabad with that same fiery spirit, channeling it into a lifetime of devotion to his family and community.
Habib’s love for football never faded; it simply made a home in our living rooms. We’ll forever picture him, long after his playing days, explaining a tricky pass or a brilliant tackle to a room full of captivated grandkids, his hands moving through the air with the same precise energy he once had on the pitch. But his true championship was his family. He was a rock for his wife, a guiding hand for his children, and the ultimate playmate for his grandchildren—always ready with a sly joke, a patient lesson, or a warm, steadying hug. Sunday afternoons at his house were less about quiet rest and more about a joyful, bustling game of cricket in the courtyard, with Baba as the enthusiastic, if slightly biased, umpire.
His joy was found in the simple, profound rhythms of life: the morning chai shared with neighbors, the deep satisfaction of a well-tended garden, and the pride he felt mentoring young boys at the local maidan, teaching them not just skills, but sportsmanship and respect. He carried the discipline of an athlete into everything, yet his coaching was always wrapped in immense kindness. He showed us that true strength is gentle, that legacy is built in daily acts of care, and that the greatest victories are the ones that lift others up.
The void he leaves is immense, a silence where his laughter and wisdom once filled every space. But what we carry forward is not sorrow, but the brilliant, enduring light of his example. He taught us to play the game of life with heart, to cherish
