Thakkali Srinivasan
January 1, 1954 - March 11, 2026 (Age 72)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Thakkali. He passed away on March 11th, 2026, after a life brimming with creativity, passion, and a wonderfully chaotic energy that drew everyone to him. I met Thakkali nearly thirty years ago, a nervous, wide-eyed film student, and he immediately took me under his wing, not with lectures, but with a mischievous grin and a challenge to see the world through a different lens. He had this incredible ability to find the darkness and the beauty in everything, and he wasnât afraid to explore it â whether it was in a haunting Tamil film like âJenma Natchathramâ or a complex musical composition. Iâll never forget the time he insisted on filming a scene in my grandmotherâs garden, convinced a particularly grumpy rose bush held the key to the entire plot of his next movie. It was utterly ridiculous, and completely Thakkali.
Thakkali was, at his core, a deeply loving man. He adored his family â his wife, Priya, his children, Karthik and Maya, and his grandchildren â and they were the sun around which his world revolved. Heâd spend hours patiently explaining his filmmaking process to Maya, who, even at a young age, could grasp the nuances of his vision. He always said his greatest joy came from creating stories that would stay with people long after the credits rolled, and he poured so much of himself into every project. He wasnât just a director and musician; he was a storyteller, a dreamer, and a fiercely loyal friend. He had this infectious laugh, a booming, joyful sound that could fill a room, and he genuinely celebrated the successes of everyone he knew.
His work, of course, speaks for itself â âWitnessâ and âAduthathuâ are testaments to his unique talent for crafting suspenseful, thought-provoking narratives. But beyond the accolades and the critical acclaim, it was the impact he had on people that truly mattered. He had a way of seeing potential in others, of encouraging them to chase their own creative passions, and of reminding them that even in the darkest corners, thereâs always a glimmer of light. He mentored countless young filmmakers, always offering a brutally honest critique delivered with a twinkle in his eye.
Thakkali leaves behind a legacy of artistry, love, and a profound appreciation for the strange and wonderful things life has to offer. He will be deeply missed, but his stories, his music, and his spirit will continue to inspire us all. Weâll miss your laughter, your challenges, and your unwavering belief in the power of a good story, Thakkali. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
