Valery Rukhledev
January 1, 1945 - April 11, 2026 (Age 81)
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Valery Rukhledev on April 11, 2026. Valery, born on January 1, 1945, was a truly remarkable man, a champion not just in the wrestling ring, but in life itself. I have so many cherished memories of him – his booming laugh, his unwavering optimism, and that mischievous twinkle in his eye. He always had a story to tell, often embellished for dramatic effect, but always with genuine warmth and a twinkle of pride. He could talk for hours about his wrestling days, recounting incredible feats and the camaraderie of his teammates. He wasn’t just a competitor; he was a true sportsman, always embodying fair play and respect for his opponents.
Valery’s life was dedicated to sports, and it wasn't just about winning medals – though he certainly won plenty! His six gold medals at the Deaflympics were a testament to his incredible talent and perseverance. But beyond the accolades, he poured his heart into building opportunities for athletes with disabilities, especially those who are deaf. His work as president of the Comité International des Sports des Sourds (CISS) was a passion, a driving force that allowed him to advocate for inclusivity and celebrate the achievements of athletes worldwide. He believed in the power of sport to break down barriers and foster understanding, and he dedicated himself to making that vision a reality. He was a mentor, a supporter, and a friend to so many.
His family was the cornerstone of his world. He adored his wife, Elena, and cherished his children and grandchildren. He was a loving and supportive father, always encouraging his children to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging. He took immense pride in his family’s successes and always had time for a listening ear and a piece of advice, delivered with a gentle smile and a comforting presence. He understood the importance of family and created a home filled with love, laughter, and endless support.
Valery leaves behind a legacy of sportsmanship, dedication, and unwavering belief in the human spirit. He touched countless lives with his kindness, his passion, and his infectious enthusiasm. The impact he had on the world of sports and on the lives of so many will be deeply felt. We will miss his stories, his laughter, and his unwavering spirit. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
