Vaughn Solomon Schofield
January 1, 1944 - April 10, 2026 (Age 82)
It’s hard to believe we’re saying goodbye to Vaughn Schofield. Born on January 1st, 1944, she left us peacefully on April 10th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of grace, intelligence, and a truly remarkable warmth. Most people knew Vaughn for her distinguished service as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan from 2012 to 2018, a role she approached with such genuine curiosity and a deep love for our province. But I knew her as something more – a cherished friend, a confidante, and someone who could always make you feel seen and valued. I remember once, years ago, we were at a local farmers market and she spent a good half hour chatting with a young woman selling homemade jams, genuinely interested in her story and the process. That was Vaughn – always connecting, always listening, always finding the extraordinary in the everyday.
Vaughn’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of dedication and joy. She was fiercely devoted to her family, a loving and supportive presence to her children and grandchildren. Family gatherings at her home were legendary – filled with laughter, delicious food (she was a surprisingly excellent baker!), and lively conversation. Beyond her family and public duties, Vaughn found immense pleasure in the simple things: a good book, a brisk walk in the park, and tending to her garden. She had a particular fondness for roses, and her garden was always a riot of color and fragrance, a reflection of her own vibrant spirit. Serving as Lieutenant Governor was a huge honor, of course, but I know she always felt most at peace surrounded by the people she loved and the beauty of the natural world.
Her time as Lieutenant Governor wasn’t just about ceremonial duties; Vaughn used the platform to champion literacy and education, visiting schools and libraries across Saskatchewan and inspiring countless young people. She had a knack for making people feel comfortable and heard, whether she was speaking to a room full of dignitaries or a group of schoolchildren. She truly believed in the power of connection and the importance of community. So many people have shared stories with me about how a simple conversation with Vaughn left a lasting impact on their lives – a word of encouragement, a moment of understanding, a feeling of being truly valued.
We will miss her terribly – her quick wit, her infectious laugh, and her unwavering kindness. Vaughn Schofield leaves behind a world a little brighter, a little more compassionate, and a whole lot more loved. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Rest peacefully, dear Vaughn. You made a difference.
