Vicente Lucas
January 1, 1936 - April 15, 2026 (Age 90)
It feels utterly impossible to write this, to put into words the enormity of losing Vicente. He slipped away on April 15th, 2026, at the grand old age of 90, and the world feels a little quieter, a little less vibrant without his booming laugh and that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Vicente, or “Vinnie” as we always called him, wasn’t just a footballer – though he was a damn good one, playing for Belenenses and even representing Portugal – he was a force of nature. I remember when I first met him, I was a nervous teenager, utterly starstruck by his reputation. He immediately put me at ease, pulling me aside with a wink and saying, “Don’t worry about the legends, just be yourself, kid.” That was Vinnie in a nutshell – generous, warm, and always ready with a bit of playful encouragement.
He was the heart of our family, a constant source of love and laughter. Growing up, his house was always filled with the aroma of his incredible cooking – he could whip up a feast for twenty with seemingly no effort – and the sound of his terrible singing (he genuinely believed he was a star!). He adored his kids and grandkids fiercely, always making time for a game of football in the garden, a silly story, or just a quiet cup of tea. He’d tell the same stories about his football career over and over again, embellishing them with each telling, and we’d all laugh along, knowing they were wonderfully, beautifully untrue. He was a fiercely loyal friend, the kind of person who would drop everything to help you out, and he had a knack for making everyone around him feel valued and loved.
Football was, of course, a huge part of his life, a passion he carried with him throughout his years. But beyond the pitch, he found joy in simple things: tending his roses, reading a good book, and spending time with his family. He had this incredible ability to find beauty in the everyday, to appreciate the small moments. He touched so many lives with his kindness and his spirit. He wasn’t a man of grand pronouncements, but his actions spoke volumes – a helping hand, a listening ear, a genuine smile.
Vicente leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a fierce determination to live life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. We’ll miss your stories, your hugs, and your infectious enthusiasm for everything. Rest in peace, my darling Vinnie.
